The Art of Organic Gyokuro
Shade-grown. Nutrient-dense. Naturally extraordinary.
At JIVANA, we believe that exceptional tea begins with how it’s grown. Our organic gyokuro is a rare and refined green tea, celebrated for its soft, mellow umami and lush vibrancy. What makes it truly special is the careful cultivation process designed to preserve L-theanine—a powerful amino acid responsible for gyokuro’s signature sweetness and soothing properties.
To achieve this, the tea plants are gently shaded for around 20 days before harvest. This slow darkening reduces photosynthesis, preventing L-theanine from converting into catechins, which would otherwise create a sharper, more astringent flavor. But it’s not as simple as throwing a cover over the crop—this is a delicate art. Gradual shading, using layers of breathable material, filters up to 98% of sunlight in stages, allowing the plants to adapt and thrive without shock.
The result? Tender, deep green leaves rich in chlorophyll, and a velvety infusion that feels as luxurious as it tastes.
Deep Roots, Living Soil
Crafted through care—not chemicals.
This gyokuro is grown in mineral-rich soil that has been enriched using a traditional fermented organic method known as Bokashi. Unlike conventional composting, Bokashi rapidly ferments plant matter and natural materials, activating beneficial microorganisms that nourish the earth and support thriving ecosystems below the surface.
Our Bokashi includes crushed mineral-rich sediment and gentle by-products from the region, designed to be bioavailable for tea plants. These elements are typically locked within stone, inaccessible to roots. But through fermentation, their nutrients are unlocked—becoming available to the plant, and ultimately, to you.
The result is a nutrient-dense tea leaf with a more robust cell structure and vibrancy. You can feel it in the infusion. You can see it in the plant. Even when steeped strongly—or left in hot water far longer than usual—this gyokuro remains balanced, refined, and remarkably free of bitterness.
This is tea as nature intended. Grown with intention, care, and a deep respect for the living soil beneath our feet.
